Los Angeles Area

1. Malibu Beach RV Park

2. Dockweiler State Beach

Destination:

Malibu Beach RV Park is one of our favorite parks so far. Overlooking the Pacific Ocean and bordering Malibu State Park, this park's setting is wonderful. The views are spectacular and the weather is great with none of the LA smog and plenty of sunshine.

About:

One of the most famous beaches in the world, Malibu has been home to surfers and celebrities for decades. A beautiful stretch of coastline on the north-west side of LA, this is where LA's rich and famous hideout for the weekend. Many of the local restaurants are absolutely packed on the weekends, and the local traffic down PCH can be murder during that same time period.

Nearby amenities:
There are couple of shopping centers if you head back towards Malibu on PCH. They have all the things you may need including supermarkets, banks, restaurants and a movie theatre.

Local haunts:

The best place to eat or get some fresh fish to take home is literally walking distance from the park. You can get down to Malibu Seafood via a path that leads you down the hill to the restaurant. The owners of this place catch the fish in the morning and serve it to you at lunch. They also have a great fish market. This is a gem of a place to have nearby.

The Beau Rivage is an upscale French restaurant, also within walking distance of the park. Now, they advertise in the RV park's site map, so you wouldn't think that this place is very upscale, but take it from those of us who walked in in our sweatshirts and jeans--if you going to dinner there, put on something nice. Good food but pricey.

Where for art thou WIFI?:

As of today, the park has a central modem in the office. We are spending the winter of 2004 here, so we installed a cable modem in our rig for the time being. There are many wireless outlets throughout the Los Angeles area, including two Starbuck's in Malibu.

Gyms:
There are several local gyms in Malibu, and, of course, since it's LA, there are many, many other gyms in the greater LA area.

Destination:
We've stayed at the Dockweiler State Beach RV Park twice so far.
The first time we absolutely loved it. It's only $22 a night for a spot that's literally on the beach. There's a bike path that goes for over 20 miles along the coastline and is great for running, biking or walking along the shore. The views are fantastic, and there are lots of amenities nearby.

About:

As I said above, the park is really on a stunning piece of land. On closer inspection though, one realizes that you're living under the flight path of LAX, which means at times, there are lots of planes flying overheard.

Nearby amenities:

On the positive side, Dockweiler is just north of Manhattan Beach which has lots of trendy stores and restaurants, plenty of gyms and several malls nearby. It's also close to the towns of El Segundo and Playa del Rey, which have several really nice restaurants as well.

Also, the beach is truly amazing.

Local haunts:

There are plenty of good restaurants in Playa del Rey including Catalini's Salerno Beach Restaurant (which features performances by Ian Whitcomb every Sunday night!), La Marina which is an old-style steak joint & inn, and Chloe's, a new gourmet spot. Manhattan Beach has many upscale as well as moderately priced restaurants.

Where for art thou WIFI?:

Los Angeles is very wired, so there's no problem finding a Starbuck's or some other outlet with WIFI. There are two Starbuck's in Manhattan Beach, we preferred the one right downtown and spent a fair amount of time there.
