We
arrived in Savannah, GA towards the end of June 2003. It was very
hot and humid, but worth the trip, nonetheless. We loved walking
around the historic district, looking at the awesome mansions and
enjoying the beautiful squares. |
| About:
|
The
closest park to Savannah is River's
End Campground located on Tybee
Island, which is about 20 minutes from downtown Savannah. Tybee
is kind of like Cape Cod or Martha's Vineyard in that it's a laid
back beach town with some great restaurants and beautiful beaches.
The park itself was perfectly adequate, some of the spaces were
a little too close together, but on the up side, you can walk to
a great restaurant right on the beach. |
| Nearby
amenities: |
The
best local amenity by far is the north shore beach three blocks
from the park. It's a wide beach and not very crowded. One morning
we actually saw about a dozen dolphins frolicking in the surf.
There's
a supermarket not far from the park and lots of tacky tourist
shops in downtown Tybee. If you have a chance to check out Chu's
Department store, it's worth a look. It looks like it's been there
forever and they sell just about everything under the sun.
The
park is also just blocks from the historic Tybee Island Lighthouse
which was recently commemorated on a United States postage stamp.

| Local
haunts: |
Tybee
Island has some great restaurants. As I mentioned above, three
blocks from the park there's is a really good casual place called
North Beach Grill (41A Meddin Drive
(912) 786-9003). It has a large outdoor deck, Caribbean inspired
food and reggae music playing all day.
Another great
place is called Georges' of Tybee (Hwy 80 (912) 786-9730). It's
a bit pricey but we had a very memorable dinner there. You can
also walk to it from the park, which is always a plus.
We took another
recommendation from Roadfood
by Jane & Michael Stern, and had a fabulous meal at The
Crab Shack. The Crab Shack is a giant seafood restaurant "where
the elite eat in their bare feet." Each table has a huge
garbage can in its center and a roll of paper towels, which makes
your seafood feast easy to manage. The portions were huge, the
food mighty fresh, and for $3.00 you can feed the baby alligators
in the pond out front.

| Where
for art thou WIFI?: |
There's
no WIFI on Tybee Island that we could find, but there are some
locations in Savannah including Starbuck's downtown.

Gyms:
|
I
couldn't find a gym on Tybee Island, so I resorted to running in
the intense heat instead. There are a few gyms in Savannah which
welcome walk-ins. |
